During the summer of 1997 a group of five musicians came together with the common vision
of forming an authentic Oberkrainer style band. Oberkrainer is a style based on traditional
Slovenian folk music, popularized by Slavko Avsenik.
At the time of this meeting, there were no specialized Oberkrainer groups in the Southern
Ontario music scene. Through endless rehearsals, these young men of Slovenian decent, specialized
their style, perfected their sound, and by the end of the summer of 1997, added a lead vocalist to
their group.
Planinski Kvintet's first performance took place in November of 1997, which was simply a trial run
for the group. Their official first performance took place on January 24, 1998 at the Slovenija Centre
on Browns Line in Toronto and marked their entry into the Slovenian music scene. Since their
introduction, Planinski Kvintet has not only performed within the Toronto area but also, across Canada,
the US, and Slovenia. The true test of their love for this music is shown in every performance they do.
Planinski Kvintet is comprised of:
Dani Gregoric - Trumpet/Flugel Horn/ Diatonic Accordion/Vocals
Mike Gregoric - Baritone/Bass/Vocals
Bill Kocjancic - Clarinet/Sax
Eric Marinko - Guitar/Vocals/Bass
Max Petrovic - Vocals/Keyboards/Vocals
Milan Vincec - Vocals/Guitar/Bass/Diatonic Accordion
People often ask why we call ourselves a kvintet? When there are six and not five members of the band.
The answer has much to do with the genre of Oberkrainer music.
The standard instrumentation includes: accordion, trumpet, clarinet, guitar and the baritone.
These five instruments make up the kvintet.
Thus, the term kvintet serves to indicate the style of music that we play.
